The Faces of Ewing's Sarcoma
Did You Know?
- 1 in 330 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20.
- Approximately 2,300 children and adolescents die of cancer each year, which makes cancer the most common cause of disease-related mortality for children between the ages of 1 and 19 years of age.
- Cancer accounts for the greatest number of disease deaths of children in the United States and kills more children per year than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy combined.
- The incidence of childhood cancer increased 33% between 1975 and today.
- Childhood cancers have no known cause; they are random.
- Sarcomas are cancers of connective tissue (bone, muscle, fat, cartilage, and soft tissue)
- There are 50 types of pediatric sarcomas and they account for 20% of all pediatric cancers.
- Each sarcoma, individually, is so rare that it is listed as an “orphan disease”.
- 99% of all sarcomas occur in children.
- Every year, over 40,000 children are diagnosed with sarcoma around the world.
- Each school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer and 10 of those children will be diagnosed with some form of sarcoma.
- Ewing’s Sarcoma is cancer of the bone and it is most often diagnosed between the ages of 10 and 20 years old.
- A tumor can arise in or around any bone in the body with few symptoms to warn the child that there is a problem.
- The cancer often spreads (metastasizes) from bones to other organs such as the lungs.
- Metastasis is present in about 33% of children.
- Metastasis at diagnosis drops the chances of 5-year survival rates to about 20%.
- Last year, the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) federal budget was $4.6 billion. Of that, breast cancer received 12% funding, prostrate cancer received 7% and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3% of that funding.
- Across all age groups and 50 subtypes of cancer, sarcoma research received less than 1% of NCI funding.
- The funding for pediatric cancer clinical trials has gone down every year since 2003.
